Poe Dameron was one of the central protagonists of the Sequel Trilogy. His parents, Kes and Shara, have been prominent characters in Marvel's current ongoing Star Wars series, set in the period immediately following Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back. Now, with the series reaching the pivotal events of Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi, the Rebellion one-shot makes it clear that the future history of the galaxy hinged as much on their actions as it did on the Battle of Endor. Gathering intelligence that an attempt on Mon Mothma's life is set to happen the ice-planet Destina, Admiral Ackbar sends Kes and Shara to protect her.

With Mon Mothma in the bounty hunter Lan-Drus's crosshairs, Kes and Shara manage to intercept Lan-Drus just before he pulls the trigger, saving the Rebel leader’s life. As it turns out, Mothma was on Destina to meet an informant, with the information she personally received revealed to be that the Empire’s highest ranking officials will be aboard the Death Star II when the Rebels attack. If not for Poe Dameron's parents, the Rebellion may have collapsed in the wake of losing its most stabilizing force in Mon Mothma. Further, in the more immediate term, the Rebels would possibly never have known that destroying the second Death Star would end the war.

Mon Mothma was a key figure in the toppling of Palpatine’s regime from the beginning. Remaining a Senator through the transition from Republic to Empire, she covertly organized resistance movements against the government before the Alliance to Restore the Republic was officially formed. Her leadership inspired countless Rebels, and if she had died days before the most important battle in the Galactic Civil War, the outcome at Endor may have turned out very differently. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Lando – while their heroics delivered the crushing final blows to the Empire, Mothma was the catalyst for their victory, for their movement.

Mon Mothma would go on, following the end of the Galactic Civil War at Jakku, to lead the fledgling New Republic. In addition to saving Mothma's life, along with the Dameron family's many heroic actions, the actions of their son Poe would ensure Kes Dameron and Shara Bey's influence carried on through the subsequent generation of galaxy-saving heroes. Marvel's Star Wars comics have excelled at fleshing out the new Disney continuity with stories that equal, and at times surpass their Legends predecessors – perhaps most notably, their expansion of Poe Dameron's parents role in the struggle for freedom in the Star Wars galaxy.
